Grandma’s 80th: Welcome to the Gun Show May 28, 2009

Filed under: birthday shoutout — Lauren Fulmer @ 10:02 pm

If someone’s ever told you that you can’t belly dance with your 80-year-old Granny AND hold a military-issued rifle in the same afternoon…. they’re obviously lying to you.

Last weekend, my mom’s side of the family all met in Chicago to celebrate some big milestones: Grandma’s 80th birthday, her & Grandpa’s 60th wedding anniversary (w-o-w), and my little sister’s college graduation. Since half the crew lives in the Chicago area and the other half are sprinkled around Kansas, we unanimously voted on Chicago for the reunion.

We had fabulous Italian food and wine at Maggianos, saw the view at the top of the John Hancock Building, heard live blues at my fave spot: Kingston Mines, and ….. wait for it… BBQ’ed in the suburbs! Nothing spells party like Elgin, IL.

My cousin, Katie, and her husband Pete hosted an all day grill-fest at their place and it was the perfect spontaneous afternoon. I love Katie and Pete. I’ve never met a couple with more random hobbies: sky diving, belly dancing, fencing, scuba diving, snowboarding, and their newest…shooting.

‘Twas the recipe for one heck of an 80th birthday bash.

We played dress-up in Katie’s belly-dancing costumes….

Then had the brilliant idea to dress Grams up. She was a good sport…

This is what “80” looks like. I dig it!

After the BBQ and cigars with the men-folk out on the porch… it was time for the gun show. Literally. Katie’s husband Pete spent a few years in the Army and has since turned shooting into a hobby.

This calls for a girls pic…

Such an entertaining weekend. My favorite part, however, was sharing stories about Grandma and hearing the ways she’d personally impacted everyone’s lives. You should’ve heard the things said about her!

I say, if you can reflect back on your years and see that huge amount of influence… it’s a live well lived!
